Live Online Barre and Somatics Workshop

Cultivating Freedom and Strength

Rolling, twisting and spiralling are fundamental patterns in movement development and pathways to full expressivity. However, as we grow we often tend to get stuck in linear and bi-dimensional forms, not fully embracing the inherent three-dimensionality of our body.

In this workshop with Vanessa Michielon, we will have fun exploring spiralling patterns from the perspective of Barre and Somatic Movement, the first focusing on stability and isolation of body parts, the second on full connectivity and effortlessness.

You can expect:

  • An energising Barre-inspired warm-up involving spinal twists in different standing positions.
  • Clear cues to maintain pelvic and shoulders stability, and core activation when twisting, which can be applied to Yoga Asana too.
  • An introduction to the principle of cross-lateral connectivity in Somatic movement: ideal for teachers and teacher trainees to understand and incorporate in their classes.
  • A series of soothing floor-based patterns inspired by Bartenieff Fundamentals, exploring organic ways to sequence movement from our fingers and our toes to the rest of the body, from the floor to seated and standing.

This workshop is ideal for those who want a fun, informative workshop and find new ways of moving, and also ideal for teachers and teacher trainees who are interested in broadening their practice and teaching skills.

It is suitable for all levels of experience, as lots of variations will be offered to adjust the intensity and range of motion to what is needed on the day. Given the focus on twisting, it is not recommended for pregnant people or anyone who should avoid this kind of patterns. Clothing covering elbows and knees could be useful for the second half of the workshop to avoid skin friction when rolling on the floor.

Vanessa is a Movement specialist and founder of the Transformative Movement method, empowering people of all walks of life to embrace Yoga, Pilates and Dance in order to improve physical health and achieve a balanced state of mind.
