More About Max

People recognise Max for his two inspiring books:

  • A Life Worth Breathing
  • There Is No APP for Happiness

“According to studies, humans communicate ninety percent nonverbally, so although we are more connected, when we communicate with only text, it is only 10% of us that is connected. Human beings need to look into each others eyes and touch each other and hear each other’s voices to feel truly connected.  We are diluting intimacy down to what I call the 10-percent relationship . . . it is no wonder we feel more alienated and isolated.” ~ Max Strom, There is No App for Happiness.

Max is also known for:

  • Inner Axis – Max’s own interdisciplinary system that incorporates yoga, breathing and other techniques to allow ordinary people to cope with stress, anxiety and sleeplessness
  • Home practice DVDs
  • A variety of speaking appearances including TEDx Talks

Our Questions Answered

Daily Move – what do you do every day to keep moving?

I try to walk every day. 10,000 steps is what I strive for.

What do you do for five minutes each day to help your health and happiness?

The 4-7-8 breath. Inhale 4 counts – hold in breath 7 counts – exhale slowly to 8 counts. Great for calmness, for lung health, and for energy.

How did you fall in love with yoga?

In the total relaxation pose at the end. Every day I would feel like I was bing liberated from the prison of my won body – from my past.

Top tip for creating a habit:

Schedule it in your diary/daily schedule. You can’t spontaneously squeeze in a new habit. It has to be a commitment and if it is a commitment it should be scheduled.

If you weren’t a yoga teacher what would you like to be?

I am not a yoga teacher now, I am an Inner Axis teacher. Inner Axis classes include breath-based yoga movement and mindfulness, and are accessible to all fitness levels. Inner Axis deals directly with stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness. It produces a level of fitness that makes you feel better, sleep better, and therefore function at a higher level, in your relationships, life, and work.

What Asana do you recommend that people do everyday?

Posture to do everyday:  Legs up the wall. Lie on your back with your legs vertical up a wall (head, trunk, and buttocks on the floor). Stay here for a minimum of 7 minutes each evening. It is a fantastic therapy for the heart. It normalizes blood pressure, slows heart rate, and helps release congested blood and fluids in the feet and legs. (also prevents varicose veins)

What’s the last book you read?

Don’t They Know It’s Friday? Cross-Cultural Considerations for Business and Life in the Gulf
by Jeremy Williams

What’s been your soundtrack this month?
