{"id":1764,"date":"2015-08-27T05:00:28","date_gmt":"2015-08-27T05:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/?p=1764"},"modified":"2017-09-08T12:57:16","modified_gmt":"2017-09-08T12:57:16","slug":"age-with-positivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/age-with-positivity\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Ways to Age with Positivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"p1\">As it says in the Yoga Sutras, the ripest fruit has the most beautiful taste!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gracefulaging.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1766\" src=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gracefulaging.jpeg\" alt=\"gracefulaging\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gracefulaging.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gracefulaging-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gracefulaging-624x351.jpeg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If we spend a lot of time on social media, we could be forgiven for thinking that our culture is made up entirely of people who never age past 30, always look great in yoga pants and eat nothing but smoothie bowls for breakfast.\u00a0Obviously I\u2019m exaggerating, but we have become rather used to seeing people\u2019s lives edited to <a href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/p\/6SYuxHwB-i\/?taken-by=movementformodernlife\" target=\"_blank\">perfection<\/a>, as well as the prizing of youth and beauty over age and knowledge.\u00a0Even the words of wisdom reposted endlessly on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/movementformodernlife\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> feed from sages such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rumi\" target=\"_blank\">Rumi<\/a> are just that: words on a pretty background and not usually accompanied by an appropriately older face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I was running a yoga and confidence coaching workshop recently and two yogis aged between 45 and 55 talked about how one of the biggest <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/videos?c=42\" target=\"_blank\">confidence<\/a> challenges for <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/videos?c=31\" target=\"_blank\">women<\/a> is getting older in our image-obsessed society and starting to feel tired and somewhat invisible.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We shared how we had all started to notice physical changes such those grey hairs creeping in, finding it harder to lose weight and our skin texture changing, but came back much more positively to how important it is to maintain self-care and self-love as we age, so that we can keep projecting radiant energy into the world &#8211; no need to become \u2018invisible\u2019!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because yoga is all about the journey and what we learn from it, rather than how we look externally when we practise asana, using yoga can help both women and men maintain a positive approach to ageing and enable us to recognise and value all the gains that come from having travelled longer on our chosen paths.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">1. Accept<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cosmetics companies make a massive profit from playing on our fear not just of ageing but looking \u2018old\u2019. It has been a pleasure lately to see more mature women with attitude such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helenmirren.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Helen Mirren<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlotterampling.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charlotte Rampling<\/a> appearing in skin care campaigns at last, and it would be great if this trend keeps going.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ageing is a given and making the most of the skin you\u2019re in, rather than fighting the inevitable, is the way to go. Just as we don\u2019t struggle our way into a pose and <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/listen-to-your-body\/\" target=\"_blank\">risk injury<\/a>, kicking against getting older is only going to hurt ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Value all the life lessons you have learned, the battle scars you have earned, like caesarean deliveries and stretch marks, and look after the body you have. Eat well, <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/challenge-cellular-renewal-cleanse\" target=\"_blank\">nourish yourself<\/a> and maintain an appropriate exercise plan that keeps muscles <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-395-get-up-get-strong\" target=\"_blank\">strong<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-462-all-about-the-shoulder-joint\" target=\"_blank\">joints mobile<\/a> to help offset age-related conditions such as arthritis; yoga is perfect and can be adapted to suit our bodies as we get older. No need to give up your arm balances, though &#8211; look at the remarkable yoga teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taoporchon-lynch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tao Porchon-Lynch<\/a> who at 96 is showing no signs of slowing down! Society is changing and we no longer have to feel that life is over once we hit a certain point &#8211; we can write our own script and not feel that we need to be \u2018age-appropriate.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>2. Learn<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Take the time to recognise how far you have come rather than dwelling on what time you have left, and look to the past with a positive attitude.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We have been through marriage and divorce, careers of different kinds and other significant life experiences and, while some people may think of <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/videos?c=44\" target=\"_blank\">relationships ending<\/a> as failure, we can encourage ourselves to see where we need to break negative cycles. In yoga philosophy we talk of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samskara_(Indian_philosophy)\" target=\"_blank\">samskaras<\/a><\/i>, which are emotional and behavioural patterns we tend to reinforce over time and find hard to <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-309-letting-go\" target=\"_blank\">let go<\/a>. Reflecting on our past and identifying what we have learned about ourselves can help move away from these cycles and avoid making the same mistakes over and over again, freeing us up to <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/videos?c=43\" target=\"_blank\">be happier<\/a> in new relationships, or to change our stale career for one we really want. <\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. Keep growing<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Self-study and development of this kind is also <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sv%C4%81dhy%C4%81ya\" target=\"_blank\">svadhyaya<\/a><\/i>, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Niyama\" target=\"_blank\">Niyamas<\/a> or observances, and is essential for personal growth, not just advancing our yoga practice on the mat. Observing <i>svadyaya<\/i> also encourages us to keep moving forward, to keep learning and to keep investing in ourselves as we age.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019ve made a massive career change in my early forties, and am assuming I am only halfway through my life with so much potential still to realise; a mindset that says \u2018I\u2019m too old\u2019 is imposing on yourself what we refer to in coaching as a \u2018limiting belief\u2019 &#8211; a self-imposed barrier that needs to be overcome for change and growth to take place.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>We must not stop making plans or seeking experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For many people, retirement is a whole new phase of life in which to travel, explore and learn.
