Sometimes it&#8217;s because they follow a very old yoga tradition, other times they may think it&#8217;s better to be safe than sorry. Some follow the more scientific approach and reject this theory altogether. It\u2019s interesting to find out what modern women really think about it, or whether they even know that there are yogis out there disputing what is right and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to put social media to good use and present females with a simple survey. As a result, over 60 women responded with their views. It was interesting to see that 34% didn\u2019t actually know about the idea of <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-393-strength-for-upside-downs\" target=\"_blank\">inversions<\/a> being the nemesis. A similar percentage of women said that they don\u2019t practice inversions during their menstrual cycles as it doesn\u2019t feel good and they are really glad they don\u2019t have to do it. Simple as that.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also noteworthy that half of the 64% of women who said that they do practice inversions during their <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-173-vinyasa-lunar-practice\" target=\"_blank\">moon cycles<\/a> were almost appalled that this is still being discussed and argued. Quoting one of the responses: \u2018period is not going to rule my life\u2019.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&gt;&gt; Try our <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/mfmlwomen\" target=\"_blank\">Women&#8217;s Health<\/a> Yoga Classes &gt;&gt;<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>From the\u00a0medical point of view, there\u00a0isn\u2019t much modern day science to support the old theory. But Google the topic and you will find multiple articles quoting complex and scary verbs and phrases such as retrograde menstruation, endometriosis, Ayurvedic apana, the worlds end (you get the idea!).<\/p>\n<p>If you choose to share with any Iyengar teacher that you\u2019re on your cycle, you will receive special treatment. <a href=\"http:\/\/kpjayi.org\/biographies\/k-pattabhi-jois\" target=\"_blank\">Pattabhi Jois<\/a> used to encourage women to take a\u00a0day off practice altogether. Same with a few other <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/videos?c=25\" target=\"_blank\">hatha yoga<\/a> regimes.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a group of teachers who either don\u2019t mention it at all or advise you to tune into your own body. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/profile\/anaforrest\" target=\"_blank\">Ana Forrest\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0words still ring in my head \u2013 when asked what she thinks about this theory, she boldly responded:\u00a0\u2018bullshit\u2019. This strong modern-day heroine promotes the idea of listening to your body rather than to old men\u2019s tales.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kathrynbudig.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kathryn Budig<\/a>, even though she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elephantjournal.com\/2009\/06\/on-yoga-chocolate-periods-via-kathryn-budig\/\" target=\"_blank\">clearly doesn\u2019t believe<\/a> in the scary endometriosis stories, is a great promoter of\u00a0ladies\u2019 holiday (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Austen\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Austen<\/a> novels and also an &#8216;artillery of spoons ready to attack a fresh mint and chocolate chip gelato\u2019 &#8211; yum!).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1967\" style=\"width: 690px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/darialadder.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1967\" class=\"wp-image-1967 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/darialadder-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"darialadder\" width=\"680\" height=\"1020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/darialadder-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/darialadder-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/darialadder-624x936.jpg 624w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/darialadder.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some teachers suggest special steps or avoiding inversions during moon days, and others view the matter from a different perspective. Consult your inner teacher when it comes to your practice.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unless we are born in a family of gymnasts, we probably aren\u2019t holding inversions much longer than a tampon commercial. Most likely, there are hundred other things that will make us ill or unwell faster, such as everlasting <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/videos?c=45\" target=\"_blank\">stress<\/a> or London smog! But the bottom line is that yoga is full of contradictions, leaving each of us ultimately responsible for our own\u00a0choices.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, we often feel the need to justify and seek approval. Females tend to experience a lot of annoyance and feminist skepticism when\u00a0someone says we need to follow a\u00a0\u2018special&#8217; routine. As human beings living in 21<sup>st<\/sup> century \u2013 where performance and results are measured on a daily basis \u2013 some feel that taking time off would be a sign of weakness; it\u2019s easy to feel as if our value is linked to our productivity.<\/p>\n<p>A friend of mine describes today\u2019s people as &#8216;perpetual doers\u2019, and I&#8217;m guilty as charged. Most of our\u00a0lives are filled with stimuli. It can seem nearly impossible to sit still and do less, <a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-309-letting-go\" target=\"_blank\">let go<\/a> and actually rest in that child\u2019s pose. To me, this entire epic battle is simply a matter of consciously allowing yourself to do less without needing a justification. Why not find ways to say thank you and appreciate what the body is doing for us every day, keeping us alive and strong. This may mean finding time, whether it is your menstruation or not, and allowing yourself to take a very personal holiday that doesn\u2019t require your boss\u2019 signature.<\/p>\n<p>One of the superhero females who participated in my survey wrote: \u2018I used to overtrain and always take the hardest option. Yoga has taught me that you don\u2019t always have to do everything at 1000%\u2019.
