Is it the very act of being on the mat, in your body? Or the benefits that practising yoga brings? Maybe it\u2019s both!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his book <a href=\"https:\/\/truthofyoga.com\/p\/book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Truth of Yoga<\/em><\/a>, author Daniel Simpson suggests that by refining awareness of inner experience, <em>yoga<\/em> is both a method and its outcome. For early yogis, the backdrop was one of world-renunciation as they occupied themselves with trying to break the cycle of worldly entrapment and liberate themselves from rebirth.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst there is much to be learned from traditional texts, escaping rebirth and withdrawing from life are, for most of us in the Western world today, alien concepts! Modern yoga outcomes are more likely to be linked to wellbeing or healing. For many of us, the practice of yoga can help us replace old habits with healthier alternatives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article we take a practical approach to how inspirational yoga can lead to transformation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is common for us to talk about \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/taking-yoga-off-the-mat-kat-farrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">yoga off the mat\u2019<\/a> as a reflection of how yoga and our practice influence our lives more holistically. With this context in mind, let\u2019s start with some clarity about our outcomes. Do you know what yours are? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-white-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-white-background-color has-background is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are some examples:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Become <strong>stronger.<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have more <strong>patience<\/strong> with ourselves and others.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be <strong>flexible <\/strong>in mind as well as in body.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice <strong>acceptance<\/strong> for who we are and what we have.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid stress<\/strong> (notice how this outcome is defined in terms of a \u2018problem\u2019 state rather than a \u2018desired\u2019 state). How would you rephrase that to say what you want, instead of what you don\u2019t?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In his delightful book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.co.uk\/books\/Yoga-The-Spirit-And-Practice-Of-Moving-Into-Stillness\/Erich-Schiffmann\/9780671534806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness<\/em><\/a>, Erich Schiffmann talks about \u2018moving into stillness in order to experience our true nature\u2019. This in turn leads to a change in the way we evaluate ourselves and the way we anticipate and imagine our future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-white-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-white-background-color has-background is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe future will look bright. You will spontaneously become optimistic about the future wellbeing of yourself and humanity and everything associated with the earth, sky and universe: Creation\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>Erich Schiffmann&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-white-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-white-background-color has-background is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t share these words lightly. In the context of what is going on in the world today, this may sound like a very lofty, and even empty, promise.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, our \u2018inner world\u2019 remains one of the few things we alone can influence. If our yoga practice \u2013 asana, pranayama, meditation &#8211; can shine a light on what is going on inside for us, then that\u2019s a great start. When we discover how to take that learning off the mat and into our day-to-day lives, we can begin to effect tangible change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-white-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-white-background-color has-background is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>INSPIRATIONAL YOGA<\/strong><strong> STORIES<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-white-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-white-background-color has-background is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Change is unique for each of us. I talked to a few yoga practitioners and teachers to understand how yoga inspires them in their everyday lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s hear some of their stories:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-white-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-white-background-color has-background is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alex<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex observes how her self-awareness grows by moving her body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her yoga practice represents a microcosm of her life, and she gains insights into her internal \u2018stuff.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She describes herself as her own \u2018lab rat!\u2019 For example, if Alex is feeling \u2018stuck\u2019 somewhere in the body, how does that translate into mental \u2018stuck-ness\u2019 off the mat?
