In fact, you\u2019re here reading these words because there\u2019s something about MFML that resonates with you \u2013\u00a0a similarity of outlook. This community feels like \u201cyour people\u201d, sharing a passion for health and wellbeing, spirituality, personal growth.<\/p>\n<p>But what about those people who are important to you but think very differently from you? Whether you\u2019re thinking of your partner, mother, sister or son, you feel the disconnection of being poles apart on certain issues.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you want children and your partner doesn\u2019t. Or you\u2019re vegetarian and your friend scoffs as he tucks into his burger. Perhaps you believe one nursing home will be best for your dad but your brother is adamant about choosing a different one.<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019re passionate about our point of view, the tendency is to dig in and become fixed in our position \u2013\u00a0but then what happens to the flow and flexibility we\u2019re developing through our yoga practice? Can we take that flow and flexibility off the mat and into our relationships?<\/p>\n<h3>The key is\u00a0<b>priorities<\/b>. We set ourselves up for either peace or stress, or for connection or disconnection, based on what we choose to prioritise in any moment.<\/h3>\n<p>In relationships, our default priority is being right. The ego mind creates identity through polarity: I\u2019m right, you\u2019re wrong. We argue our point, justify ourselves, find evidence to prove the other person wrong. This causes stress and conflict.<\/p>\n<p>When we become conscious, we see:\u00a0<i>I want to prioritise feeling good. I want to prioritise connection above winning this argument.<\/i>\u00a0The feeling of connection trumps everything and it\u2019s a feeling that happens inside so it\u2019s 100% within our power to feel connected, regardless of how the other person shows up.<\/p>\n<h3>On the yoga mat, we can strengthen our prioritising muscle. As you settle in at the start of a MFML yoga class, ask yourself: What is my priority in today&#8217;s practice? For example: \u201cToday, I prioritise breathing deeply as more important than getting my head on my knees\u201d.<\/h3>\n<p>Throughout a class, you can practise priorities within each specific asana \u2013 for example: \u201cRight now, I prioritise creating length in my spine above the need to touch my toes.\u201d Frequently, a MFML teacher will support us by offering these kind of prompts, guiding our focus.<\/p>\n<p>For example, yesterday as I took\u00a0a short yin class with <a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-teacher\/norman-blair\">Norman Blair<\/a> he reminded me to prioritise paying attention.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-272-yin-breath-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4538 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-03-at-11.30.23-1024x519.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-03-at-11.30.23-1024x519.png 1024w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-03-at-11.30.23-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-03-at-11.30.23-768x389.png 768w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-03-at-11.30.23-624x316.png 624w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-03-at-11.30.23.png 1207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And today,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-teacher\/clarebeagley\">Clare Beagley<\/a> instructed me in seated twist\u00a0to prioritise the stability of legs and pelvis.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-164-beginners-4-twist-to-unwind\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4539 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-03-at-11.52.38-1024x539.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>We can be intentional about our priorities. We can get things in order based on what\u2019s most important in our lives. We can ask ourselves: What\u2019s my highest intention? What do I most want?<\/h3>\n<p>We can then take this practice off the mat into our relationships. When we\u2019re with a loved one who\u2019s very different from us, we can ask ourselves: What\u2019s my priority in this relationship? Is it more important to argue my point or hear hers? Is it more important to convince him that I\u2019m right or to be interested in his point of view? What matters most to me right now?<\/p>\n<p>Our yoga practice can support us to prioritise what matters most in our\u00a0 relationships.
