It is an important reminder that all\u00a0around us is change, and in the midst of change, slowing down to restore\u00a0and rebuild is a part of the natural cycle of life. The body and the\u00a0mind\u00a0are constantly processing external, and internal factors, and in today&#8217;s\u00a0world where the pace is fast and the expectations are high to &#8220;keep calm\u00a0and carry on&#8221;, we often forget or edit out the steps involved at\u00a0<em>maintaining calmness<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">During the darker months, the mind can tell the body it doesn&#8217;t want to\u00a0move quite so much, or venture out doors. While it is important to\u00a0listen\u00a0to the natural instinct we have to hibernate, the mind can be clever,\u00a0manipulative and deceiving. Delving into why we may be avoiding the\u00a0practice is an important aspect of listening to the body&#8217;s needs. During\u00a0the colder months while the mind may feel lethargic or lazy, it is even\u00a0more important to move the body and stay disciplined with a\u00a0<em>movement-based practice<\/em>. The body benefits immensely by creating some\u00a0inner fire and lubricating the joints, and it is just important, if not\u00a0more so, for the mind to have a physical experience to bring it back\u00a0into\u00a0the body. <em>Darker days can lead to reduced energy and even depression<\/em>,\u00a0which is thwarted by increasing the oxygen flow to the brain,\u00a0stimulating\u00a0the hormone centres such as the pituitary, pineal and thymus glands, and\u00a0giving the mind a purposeful focus such as completing an asana practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The change in season can be a wonderful time to change up your yoga\u00a0practice by trying out a new teacher, method, or simply <em>re-focusing the\u00a0your intention<\/em>. Here are five tips that may help to renew your\u00a0perspective in the midst of seasonal change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Homyogatips1psd1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-558\" src=\"http:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Homyogatips1psd1.png\" alt=\"Home Yoga Tips\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Homyogatips1psd1.png 800w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Homyogatips1psd1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Homyogatips1psd1-624x468.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>1. Listen to your body, but challenge your mind.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The mind is very\u00a0clever,\u00a0and at its first chance it may jeopardise your practice time or space.\u00a0Even when in doubt, create a tiny space for a limited practice. Drop the\u00a0expectation of having to do a long or challenging class, and be\u00a0satisfied\u00a0with doing something rather than nothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>2. Be honest with yourself. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When you aren&#8217;t making it onto the mat\u00a0because you feel too tired or think you may be too busy with other\u00a0commitments, see if you can travel beyond these excuses\u00a0\u00a0to make a space\u00a0in your day. Similarly, when you notice your mind starting to wander\u00a0while you are on the mat or struggle to get into certain poses, see if\u00a0you can re-centre your focus on doing something for the body that is\u00a0beneficial, beyond squeezing yourself into a position that is a\u00a0misaligned shape you are making with the body. Do less, well, rather\u00a0than\u00a0doing more in an unfocused way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>3. Make the commitment. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once you have started a practice, commit to a\u00a0specific amount of time or a specific class. Starting a practice and\u00a0then\u00a0quitting half way through is a slippery slope. Be realistic with the\u00a0time\u00a0you are willing to commit, and if you are trying out a new teacher or\u00a0new\u00a0style, try to make a commitment in the first five minutes or so. If you\u00a0don&#8217;t enjoy the first few minutes, you still have time to change\u00a0approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>4. Just show up. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Whether it is 10 minutes or ninety minutes, be present\u00a0for the duration. The most important part of a class can be the moment\u00a0you recognise you are not paying attention; that is the moment you can\u00a0refocus and slow down to get back into the body rather than simply\u00a0following a teachers instruction blindly without honouring your own\u00a0body,\u00a0it&#8217;s limitation and potential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>5. Nurture yourself. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Be present to how you are fuelling the body and\u00a0mind. The quality and nutrients we put into the body are as important as\u00a0the thoughts we allow into the mind. Eating an organic, plant-based diet\u00a0that is prepared without harming any other being and with love is as\u00a0important to fuelling our yoga practice as is healing, positive\u00a0intention.
