I was living out in the sticks, and didn\u2019t want to settle for teachers who weren\u2019t really <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">living yoga<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> day in day out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>But what is it to be a \u2018yogi?\u2019<\/h5>\n<p>Well, there are some aspects of yoga philosophy which are key to why <strong>yoga isn\u2019t gymnastics<\/strong> or stretching.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One of those aspects is<strong> living consciously<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That means that we become aware of all of our decisions in life, both in our inner and our outer world, and we make sure that those decisions, words and deeds contribute to a better world. One of the \u2018<strong>Niyamas<\/strong>\u2019 or yoga\u2019s ethical guidelines relating to how we behave in the world, is about \u2018<strong>Ahmisa<\/strong>\u2019, meaning <strong>non-violence<\/strong> to others. Yogis interpret this differently, but, for example, Ghandi interpreted this guide as meaning non-violence to animals, so we must be <strong>vegetarians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One other aspect of non-violence is non-violence to the <strong>environment<\/strong>. \u00a0Thankfully, public opinion is starting to understand the immense violence that humans have caused to the oceans, the soils, our rivers and other creatures, all in the name of \u2018progress\u2019, but as yogis, there are many little things that we can do each day to help live in a <strong>non-harmful life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5>A Toxin-Free House<\/h5>\n<p>And one thing that I\u2019m starting to do now, is to live in a <strong>toxin-free house<\/strong>. I\u2019m starting to do this by not having any toxic chemical chemical cleaning products in the house, either for my skin, hair cleaning or using round the house.
