Mainly that&#8217;s caused by sitting on chairs (more of that next week!), but also many of our activities when we do exercise, only serve to tighten hips \u2013 think of cycling, walking or running. We don\u2019t have many exercises which focus on the <strong>mobility\u00a0<\/strong>of the hips. Which is why yoga is so very powerful as an antidote to all those chairs, that running, and our sedentary lifestyle.<\/p>\n<h5>A Pain in the Back<\/h5>\n<p>When our hips are less mobile, it means that we no longer have the option to <strong>squat or sit cross legged<\/strong>, so we\u2019re more likely to sit on chairs, which is the worst thing for the hips, and tight hips, together with tight hamstrings and weak stomach muscles are a cause of lower back pain.<\/p>\n<p>So when we keep our hip joints mobile, together with stretching the hamstrings, we know we\u2019re <strong>reducing the strain on the lower back.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have long days you spend seated, if you need to drive a lot, or you\u2019ve had a sedentary lifestyle, chances are, your hips will be tight, and where muscles are bigger, hips are frequently tighter, so many men suffer from stiff hips.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-classes\/healthy-hips\">Hip Openers<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>One of this week\u2019s new classes is a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-995-lotus-focused-vinyasa-flow\">hip lotus blossoming focus<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s an advanced class, so only for our\u00a0mobile movers \u2013 the lotus position is a pose for those with healthy, happy knees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-995-lotus-focused-vinyasa-flow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6109\" src=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/jean-lotus.png\" alt=\"hips, Jean Hall\" width=\"680\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/jean-lotus.png 932w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/jean-lotus-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/jean-lotus-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/jean-lotus-624x352.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The golden rule is to go slow, start perhaps our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-166-easy-hips-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/movementformodernlife.com\/yoga-class-166-easy-hips-1\">Easy Hips Series<\/a><\/strong>, but start slowly and carefully. You need to remember that in many poses, if your hips are tight and you try to force things, you\u2019ll put the strain into the knee. Ouch!!!!<\/p>\n<h5>Less is More<\/h5>\n<p>So don\u2019t push anything, <strong>less is more.\u00a0<\/strong>But when your hips come alive, you\u2019ll find so much less pain in the back, but you\u2019ll also start to feel a magical freedom through the body.
