Acro Yoga
Acro Yoga combines yoga, healing arts and acrobatics. It is physically demanding but you don’t need to be an advanced yogi to enjoy Acro. The key to Acro yoga is its focus on teamwork and trust. There are three roles: base, flyer and spotter. At least one person will be lifted into the air. It also draws on traditions such as circus arts, dance and cheerleading. It’s great fun and can help build stronger relationships, move the body with awareness and build strength. You can help build strength for Acro Yoga through practising vinyasa yoga, power yoga and Forrest inspired yoga.

Accomplished Acro 4: Back Bird
The next in our Accomplished Acro Yoga tutorial series, join London Acro Ladies for a deep supportive backbend. This pose is similar to Front Bird but in back bird the flyer faces the ceiling rather than the floor. This is a really nice antigravity backbend for the flyer and is a great opportunity for the base to build strength and refine alignment. For this pose, as with front bird, the spotter stands at the side of the flyer in goddess pose. One hand is positioned below the upper back and one below the thighs. It goes without saying that you must not attempt this until you have watched the introductory video outlining safety and spotting techniques and never try Acro Yoga in a confined area.

Accomplished Acro 3: High Flying Whale To Throne
This transition sees the flyer move from a backbend into a seated position on the bases feet. The flyer stands with their feet either side of the bases head facing away from them. The base takes the flyer's ankles and places their feet on the upper back. The flyer is lifted into the backbend and can relax the upper body but keeps the legs strong and toes pointed. From there the base takes the sole of the Flyers feet and transitions their feet one at a time underneath the flyers bum as the flyer sits up. The flyer can then hook their feet in front of the bases shins for stability. Spotters will start to the side in a goddess stance with one arm above and one below the flyers torso moving to a warrior one stance to the back as the flyer sits up. It goes without saying that you must not attempt this until you have watched the introductory video outlining safety and spotting techniques and never try Acro Yoga in a confined area.

Accomplished Acro 2: Shoulder Stand on Bridge
This is another inversion where the base is supine providing a platform for the flyer with the legs. The hips are lifted towards the sky, feet are hip width apart and the flyer places their shoulders on the bases thighs allowing their head to be in the gap between. From there the flyer can kick, press or be scissor lifted up into the inversion. Spotter will be in the spine side of the flyer with hands near the hips. It goes without saying that you must not attempt this until you have watched the introductory video outlining safety and spotting techniques and never try Acro Yoga in a confined area.

Accomplished Acro 1: Beach
Beach is a pose where the base is on all fours providing a stable platform for the flyer to invert on. The base's role is to stay still and strong so that the flyer can place one arm under their belly and the other along the bases arm. From there the flyer inverts and finds the balance using their arms for stability. Many options will be shown for this and we highly recommend the use of a spotter who will be on the spine side of the flyer with hands near the hips. The spotter can also help scissor lift the flyer up into the inversion and walk around to the back once they are up to spot. It goes without saying that you must not attempt this until you have watched the introductory video outlining safety and spotting techniques and never try Acro Yoga in a confined area. The flyer should have a free standing handstand before trying this pose.

Accomplished Acro: Introduction
Acroyoga is a combination of yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage. In this practise there is a base who is the person providing the foundation of the pose, there is the flyer who is the person creating a shape on the platform provided by the base and there is a spotter who's role is to ensure that both the flyer and the base are safe and to catch any falls that may occur. The more acrobatic side of Acro yoga is the solar element which will invoke more strength and active participation from the flyer. The lunar element is where we find the therapeutic flying and Thai massage which involves the flyer being completely passive and enjoying the ride! Acroyoga is a super fun way to connect and play with others. Be prepared to laugh a lot and have high levels of fun!

Acro Yoga 4: High Flying Whale
A therapeutic pose, which means that the flyer is relaxed and has the opportunity to completely relax whilst in the high flying whale pose. This pose needs even greater clarity and communication, so is brilliant for relationship-building. If you can find a ”˜spotter’, that will be really helpful for getting to know this pose

Acro Yoga 3: Straddle Throne
The third in our Acro Yoga Series (yoga for two people), Straddle Throne is a really fun and visual posture which when mastered opens up a lot of possibilities for other postures and being able to create flows. Please please please take your time with this one - be slow and gradual and above all stay safe. This is an advanced pose and a spotter (third person) is highly recommended in the early stages. It is also important to ensure that you are secure in Front Bird before progressing to Straddle Throne.

These are the Flyer and Base Range of Motion exercises. Remember that this is much more difficult than it looks, so go slowly and build up your strength and trust gently.
