Kundalini Yoga › Kiranjot
Kundalini Yoga is a combination of movement, breath, sound and mudra. It is an ancient healing practice which helps you to connect to the energy within yourself. Some postures are dynamic, while others are held in stillness, but the focus is on meditation whilst in a pose, rather than physical alignment. Kundalini yoga is good for building strength, enhancing concentration and improving mood. Often a kundalini practice will include a ‘Kriya’, where practice builds on the previous one and moves the energy in a precise way to create a lovely buzz in the body and mind. If you enjoy Kundalini yoga, you may also wish to try meditation and breath work.

The first half is a seated practice comprising the jumpstart kriya; it looks simple but be prepared to persevere! It is a great warm up for the second part of the class. The second half is aimed at strengthening the aura, so expect lots more working of the arms. You can do both parts as one class, or do them separately (second part starts at 18:40).

The morning set is an energising Kundalini yoga practice, perfect for waking you up! It is a great alternative to sun salutations as it is wrist-free. The focus here is on the breath; get started with breath of fire to wake your body and mind, then move into energising postures. The class will wind down for some more introspective poses, including a supported shoulder stand with a fun Kundalini yoga twist. It ends with a lovely, long relaxation. You will need a bolster or some pillows.

A quick soothing practice to help relax the body and clear the mind after a busy day. Kirtan Kriya is a key practice with the Kundalini Yoga teachings. It’s a meditation with a mantra and mudra that helps balance the elements of the body and clear the subconscious mind of unnecessary clutter. We prepare the body to sit comfortably with spinal flexes.
A kriya is a specific sequence of postures or actions for a specific purpose. I like to call them recipes, each step works in turn to create a specific effect for your body, mind and spirit. There are hundreds of Kundalini Kriyas, this one is called the Kriya for Elevation. It is a simple practice involving lots of flexing the spine, stretching of the legs and stimulating breath of fire. The practice finishes with a more challenge held meditation Sat Kriya which is a key practice in kundalini Yoga. It encourages circulation of panic life force through all the chakras. It’s a great practice to help relieve symptoms of depression. This sequence has breath of fire to begin with so please watch my introduction to Kundalini Yoga if this is a new practice for you or you haven’t quite mastered it yet. Tune in to this traditional Kundalini yoga class or Kriya, as they are known in the Kundalini tradition. This full Kundalini yoga class involves chanting, mudra and physical hatha yoga poses and a beautiful, long Savasana to finish.
