A MORE SKILLFUL AND SUSTAINABLE LIFE

Learning more about yoga philosophy can help us to lead a more skillful and more sustainable life. This course (the first of a series of courses exploring yoga philosophy) will introduce Patanjali’s ‘eight-limbed path’.  You will gain an insight into the values ancient yogis pursued, why meditation and breathing are emphasised so much and the importance of relaxing into your true self. This course is made up of a series of down-to-earth talks guiding you through the eight limbs with suggestions of applying these off the mat. These are followed by movement (asana) classes which give you the opportunity to apply your learning to the mat. Live discussions and Q&As compliment the recorded classes so you can explore deeper.

This course includes:

WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW TO PRACTICE THIS COURSE

During this course you will alternate between applying the yoga sutras to your daily life and to applying these on the mat. Each day you will be introduced to one element from Patanjali’s eight limbed path. After you listen to the talk, allow it to permeate through your day and see if you are able to apply any of it to your daily life.  This is the same when it comes to your movement classes. We have specially selected classes that tie in with the talk posted in the previous step. Are you able to apply the principles to this class?

WHO WAS PATANJALI

The yoga sutras are 196 short pithy phrases or aphorisms relating to the theory and practice of yoga. It is believed that a sage called Patanjali compiled these sometime between 500 and 400 BCE. Someone called Patanjali also compiled a Sanskrit grammar and wrote significant texts about Ayurveda, but there’s no evidence that this is the same man. The yoga sutra draws on various traditions of the time and is the founding book of a school of philosophy known as ‘yoga’. The text covers many different things but one of the most significant is the ‘eight-limbed path’ we will be exploring over the coming weeks.

Watch this short video from Vidya to find out more about Patanjali and how we might apply ancient wisdom to our modern lives.

Yoga For Happiness (4): Kindness

In this gentle vinyasa yoga class, the focus is on ahimsa (non violence). In the body, we can work with soft negotiation rather than force or brutality. In the mind, we can be aware of the tone with which we speak to ourselves. Pay attention to what you ask of your body in today's practice; notice when you are forcing it to do something it doesn't want to do / ignoring or overriding body wisdom. Pay attention to the internal dialogue and notice the tone of internal dialogue. Make a note of any recurring thoughts. Finally, write a mantra, something supportive and loving, that you can repeat to yourself (e.g. you are perfect as you are).

Traditionally in India, young men would choose between being a wandering yogi or a householder, but today it is acceptable to practice a spiritual life and yoga, and be a householder. But how is this Yama relevent to our lives today in the West when celebacy is not a common way to live?

In doing yoga, we can learn from the Buddha’s wisdom of working with right effort. This practice will look at how we can move through a practice and learn to identify when we’re putting in healthy effort, or when our effort feels a bit more like a struggle! There will be some strong arm balances like one-legged crow (eka pada galavasana) where we can play our edge, but also moments of surrender. Hope you enjoy it.

Cultivating Our Inner Light

A beautiful flow to open the heart, warm the back and still the mind. In the Yoga Sutra, the busy mind is described as quieting down through a number of ways: lengthening the breath, concentration on objects, or on experiences in deep sleep or dream states. It is also suggested that the mind can be quieted by concentration on the ever-present source of light that is believed to dwell inside the human heart. This light grows brighter when we do practices – like polishing a jewel that begins to shine and reflects the light all around it. We’ll look at ways to work with sunlight and moonlight in this fluid vinyasa-based sequence, and help awaken the source of light within each of us.

Meditation: Intimacy with Being Here

In this mindfulness-based meditation, we will cultivate the intimacy of being here – continually present and awake. Sounds good, right? The problem is, we’re usually anywhere BUT here. Usually we are caught up in various stories, or contracted around our own set of problems. This is what the Buddha described as the I, ME, MINE condition. When we train our minds to recognise this happening, we can shift this state. When this happens, experience can open up again. We hear sounds around us, breath moving, body sensing and feeling. We can suddenly be here again, in the intimacy of things; awake to the miracle of being alive.
