Discover how a healthy nervous system can help rehabilitate and prevent injuries
An essential workshop for yoga teachers and practitioners of yoga who want to discover the power of yoga in supporting the nervous system to help rehab and prevent injuries.
Join Sylvia Garcia and Ava Katics for an exploration of the nervous system through a mixture of discussion and movement practice. We will also delve into neurodynamics, anatomy, neuro-yoga and injury support and prevention.
What is neurodynamics?
Neurodynamics is the study of nerve movement through its surrounding tissues and interface (think bone, muscles, ligament, fascia). Healthy nerves should be able to slide, resist compression and adapt to different loads and pressures, and yoga poses generally tend to help mobilise and stretch the nerves to reduce irritation and improve range of motion.
Neural yoga can:
- Increase blood flow
- Reduce inflammation
- Improve conduction of the nerve
- Reduce pain
- Keep the nervous system in a healthy state
Nerves require an uninterrupted blood flow to move freely and for the effective conduction of impulses. Sometimes tension around a tissue is enough to restrict movement, cause inflammation, block normal conduction and possibly lead to pain. By selecting specific yoga poses we can direct mobility to specific parts of the nerves which may be blocked.
Mobilisation of the nerve is a gentle process and unlike stretches to muscle, fascia or ligaments there is no physical perception of the stretch, however there will be a release of endorphins and encephalins (the body’s natural opiates) promoting the feel good factor!
This workshop will look at how to maintain a healthy nervous system in both the rehabilitation and prevention of injuries. With a few tweaks yoga can be a comprehensive component of any well being preventative or rehabilitation practice. We will also explore the rhythm/cadence of a yoga practice as that is essential when aiming to influence neural tissues.
You can expect:
- An exploration of the anatomy of the nervous system and the route of the main nerves
- To look at the effect of yoga poses on localised tension points
- To learn how to incorporate all this into a yoga practice
This workshop is ideal for teachers wanting to expand their knowledge, or any yoga practitioner interested in deepening their practice and exploring how to prevent or rehabilitate injuries safely within their yoga practice.
