Your alarm shocks you out of sleep. You shush the ‘Seriously, morning ALREADY?’ voice in your head and will yourself upright. Coffee. Shower. The first outfit that throws itself at you. And you rush to the car or the train, the office or the nursery, and through your day.
Question for you: what if you lived today on purpose?
What if, instead of the day ambushing you, you met it with a knowing smile and a told it who’s boss?
What if you lived with intention?
Intention is powerful stuff. The stuff achievements are made of. Where progress begins. And it may be having a bit of a moment, but truth is, the idea has been around for ages. Surf through the Upanishads and you’ll find this:
“You are what your deepest desire is. As your desire is, so is your intention. As your intention is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.”
Translation: Your intentions become actions, which create your life.
See, powerful stuff. So what is an intention?
INTENTION: A thing intended; an aim or a plan
An intention is your message to the universe. ‘I will do this’. It’s a desire declared. A seed planted. And just like any seed – it contains within it a code for the creation of something beautiful and unique.
Or, as the delightful Deepak Chopra says, ‘Intention is the starting point of every dream. It is the creative power that fulfils all of our needs, whether for money, relationships, spiritual awakening, or love.’
When you make an intention and release it out into the world, you begin a process of moving towards what you really want. Cogs begin to turn. Things begin to move and grow. Your life takes shape – whichever shape you choose.
That’s the why. Here’s the how.
Setting an intention isn’t complicated. In fact, it’s seriously simple.
We recommend making the practice part of your morning ritual. Instead of a shaken awake, ‘Oh Jesus I’m late for work’ kind of wake up, give yourself some time to rise slowly. Sit in quiet meditation – even five or ten minutes will do. And in that focused, energised space straight after, choose your intention for the day.
It could be anything. How you want to show up (‘Give mum my best quality of attention today’, ‘Complete my work with loving care’). How you want to feel (‘Strong and un-flappable’, ‘On fire’, ‘In love’). Or what you want to accomplish (‘Brainstorm that beautiful idea I had’, ‘Take a walk with mother nature’). The only rule is, make it positive. Like attracts like. Positive thoughts multiply. As do negative.
Write your intention down. This makes it real. And carry it with you in your mind (and maybe your handbag), as you move throughout your day. Then watch with wonder as it gently unfolds. As you feel gently steered towards certain choices. As you achieve what you set out to, as if by magic.
We believe so much in the power of intention that we’ve made it a core principle of our Cellular Renewal Online Retreat. For seven mornings, you’ll be guided through a short meditation and intention setting with our Lizzie Reumont, followed by a delicious Jivamukti practice. It’s the perfect way to begin building intention into your routine.
It could be the first step to changing your life.
